This summer literally hundreds of footballers will meet in Austria and Switzerland for the finals of what is called "The European Championships". They are poor, backward, and hardly have a single no-nonsense centre half amongst them. Some of them can barely speak English.

Footballers In Need has a simple goal. To give these footballers the support they deserve. Their own people often meet their achievements with little more than a gallic shrug of indifference. But that is no reason for us to forget them. Together, the greatest football fans in the world can make a difference. And like all great journeys, it starts with a single step. Put simply, we want you to adopt a player for the duration of the EURO 2008 tournament.
